Sometimes I feel like no matter how often I moisturize, my skin is still dry. I usually never go a night without doing my skincare routine and yet it seems like my skin just won’t be hydrated. This is why I started exfoliating.
Exfoliation is the process of using a product to remove dead skin cells from the surface of your skin in order to allow new ones to regenerate. By removing dead skin, it not only makes your skin look more vibrant but it allows your skincare to work better because there isn’t an excess of cells to absorb through. Your skin won’t feel as rough and your moisturizer will absorb more easily.
There’s also different types of exfoliation... physical and chemical!
What is Physical Exfoliation?
Physical exfoliation is using a product such as charcoal to physically remove the dead skin cells. Our Solid Face Wash is a great example of this. It uses finely mixed charcoal to gently buff away dull, dead skin. Massaging this into your skin while cleansing will give your skin an easy refresh to help fade away hyperpigmentation and remove dry skin. Our Blue Charcoal Exfoliating Oars Bar does a similar trick, but for your body. This is perfect for back acne and dry skin on your elbows or anywhere else.
What is Chemical Exfoliation?
Chemical exfoliation is when you use a product that contains a chemical exfoliator like acids which fall under different categories such as BHAs, AHAs, and PHAs. BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acid) is great for people with oily or acne-prone skin. Salicylic Acid is a type of BHA that is commonly used and is typically a little more intense of an exfoliator compared to AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) or PHAs (Polyhydroxy Acids). One of my favorite AHAs is Azelaic Acid because it’s great for people who are prone to redness and rosacea and is better for people with more sensitive skin. But everyone’s body is different and will have a different experience to different products so it’s always important to do a patch test in order to see how your skin will react to something.
Why is Exfoliating Your Skin Important?
Exfoliating is important because it helps your body with cell turnover and in doing so will help to fade acne scars or hyperpigmentation, unclog pores, reduce excess sebum, and helps to prevent signs of aging. But because you’re removing dead skin, your new skin underneath will be more susceptible to the sun. Which means you should be more cautious of sun exposure and always always wear an SPF!
