What is the Difference Between Chemical and Mineral SPF?
Sunscreen can be made from two different types of active ingredients: mineral and chemical. At Oars + Alps, we offer both options. Mineral sunscreen uses naturally occurring minerals, such as Zinc Oxide, to create a physical barrier on the skin's surface to reflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and transform UV rays into heat, which are then released from the skin.
To provide UV protection, chemical sunscreen needs to be applied at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, whereas mineral SPF works instantly but may take longer to rub in.
Is Chemical Sunscreen Waterproof?
Not all chemical sunscreens are waterproof, but nearly all our chemical SPFs, including our sunscreen sprays and lotions, are water- and sweat-resistant for 80 minutes, making them a perfect solution for active men while sweating or going in the water.
